Families – Blair Midterm Practice Test

Genograms are a hallmark of Bowen Family Systems Theory, because they map how family relationships and patterns stretch across generations. Bowen emphasizes the influence of multigenerational dynamics on a person’s current functioning, including how anxiety, boundaries, coalitions, and differentiation of self are transmitted. By diagramming family members, their relationships, and important events across generations, the clinician can see recurring patterns, loyalties, and emotional triangles that shape present issues. This makes genograms a primary assessment tool, guiding not just understanding but also the direction of treatment toward the family system rather than isolated symptoms.

Other approaches focus on different tools: Narrative Therapy centers on stories and meaning-making, Solution-Focused Therapy uses questions to identify exceptions and goals, and Behavioral Therapy concentrates on observable behaviors and functional analysis. Genograms, in contrast, are most characteristic of Bowen Theory because they explicitly illuminate multigenerational influences and relational dynamics that the theory seeks to address.
